About
“I believe that everyone has the tools inside of them to be a leader in some way. It just takes a certain amount of work to bring those qualities forward and unleash the leader within!”
For over 25 years I have had the opportunity to coach individuals, groups, and leaders to discover their strengths and achieve the levels and goals they never thought were possible. In the pool, the athletes I directly coached represented our club at prestigious local, regional, and national swim meets; this includes helping athletes achieve standards for several Olympic Trials meets, a level only seen by 2% of all swimmers in the country. Swimmers also represented the United States at International competitions such as Junior Pan Pacifics, Pan American Games, and World Championships. Most importantly, the athletes I directly coached have gone on to become incredible leaders after their time in the pool ended.
I not only draw on my personal experience as a coach, but my lifetime of being coached myself. For as long as I can remember, I have had the opportunity to be led and inspired by a list of amazing coaches: men and women who took the time and energy necessary to guide me throughout my life. I am eternally grateful for having had these opportunities and relish the opportunity to continue to carry on this legacy. Coaching, like leading, is not a “job” but a calling to something much greater.
Building a business, regardless of the industry, is more than just the results you personally deliver. It is about the performance of the entire organization. As the owner of Greater Philadelphia Aquatics, I needed to go beyond the athletes I was coaching to ensure the overall success of the business. This was achieved by directly coaching staff members and volunteers: getting them to understand and buy into the mission, vision, and values of the organization and to lead with their strengths…and the results show this. Over the course of 15 years in business, Greater Philadelphia Aquatics grew from 200 members, 10 employees, and $200,000 in annual revenue to over 700 members, 45 employees, and $1.2 million in annual revenue.
I also served on the Board of Directors for Middle Atlantic Swimming for 15 years, most importantly spending four years as Board Chair. Middle Atlantic oversees the governance and development of the sport in the region which included 115 teams, 250 coaches, and over 10,000 athletes. During my time as Chair, we were able to increase programming for swimmers, coaches, and volunteers as well as increase both our annual budget and financial reserves. This work was the foundation for the organization to offer considerable support for clubs during the 2020 COVID related shutdown of youth sports, allowing Middle Atlantic to provide even more emergency funding to member clubs than USA Swimming did.
Adults and children; new entrants into the workforce as well as executives and retirees; teams and individuals…we have the ability to bring out the best in everyone and significantly change the leadership dynamic in our world.
